PEER REVIEW ROLE FOR DEVELOPMENT OF FORMER OPENCAST SITE

We have been working for several months now as a peer reviewer with a large developer to help with the preparation of an engineering solution for a complex site in the East Midlands. The site contains deep areas of uncompacted opencast backfill, which coupled with level, groundwater and fill variability issues presents significant challenges.  We have been involved with the review of potential solutions put forward by others, working collaboratively to constructively challenge ideas and assist in their development.  The work is continuing  and we look forward to being able to provide more details in the near future.

FLOOD RISK SLOPE DESIGN

We have recently been commissioned by a new client to support them on a large residential development in Yorkshire.  The site lies in a floodplain and the associated drainage attenuation scheme presents significant geotechnical issues.  Problems to be addressed include slope stability in rapid drawdown conditions and potentially de-stabilising groundwater flows.  It promises to be an interesting challenge and we are looking forward to working on it.

SETTLEMENT OF OPENCAST BACKFILL

Following successful delivery of a similar project, we were approached by a new client to support them on a large residential development in Derbyshire.  Since our appointment, we have completed the assessment of the likely settlement of backfill placed during previous coal extraction works and made movement predictions across the site both if the ground was not treated and if the ground was treated using vibro methods.  We are now about to aid the developer consider foundation solutions across the site, taking account of variable structural form, variable loadings and variable fill depths

SETTLEMENT OF ALLUVIAL CLAY AND PEAT

In late 2017 we had the pleasure of working with a new client on the assessment of the likely settlement beneath the roads, drives and driveways at a proposed housing development site in Yorkshire.  The ground comprised soft alluvial clays and peats, and some land-raising was required.  Movements were estimated based on available information supported by published data and correlations.  Due to the magnitude of movements, a range of treatment options were suggested and the design of the development is presently being advanced.

SETTLEMENT OF OPENCAST BACKFILL

Over recent months we have been working with a developer on the assessment of the likely settlement of backfill placed during previous coal extraction works on a site in Derbyshire.  The assessment resulted in movement predictions across the site both if the ground was not treated and if the ground was treated using vibro methods.  The work showed that vibro techniques offered a potential cost-effective treatment solution and work is now progressing to develop the treatment design.
