NEW HIGHWAY AND EARTHWORKS COMMISSION

We are pleased to announce that we are about to commence work on a new major leisure and commercial development in Derbyshire.  Access to the currently confidential site will require highway diversion works and construction of an access road across sidelong ground.  Works are to be undertaken in accordance with EC7, and the scope of work to be undertaken by Surepath Consulting will include inputs to the ground investigation design, slope stability appraisals and earthworks assessments, as well as provision of geotechnical support to the highway and bridge specialists.  We aim to be able to release further details of the project in due course.

NHBC “BUILDING FOR TOMORROW” 2017

We are pleased to announce that we have been asked to support the NHBC in the delivery of their “Building  for Tomorrow” event for 2017.  Together with a partner, Geo Matters Limited, we will be providing a seminar on future changes to ground investigation requirements to meet changes introduced by EC7, BS5930:2015 and BS8004:2015.  We will be presenting at venues across the UK and we look forward to seeing some of you there.  More details of the event can be found using this link.

NEWS ON NEW STANDARDS

British Standards are always being reviewed and updated by the BSI.  Keeping up to date with the developments is important for us all, so to assist our Clients we are pleased to advise that some of the British Standards commonly used by geotechnical engineers that are new or have been updated by the BSI are listed below:

  • BS EN ISO 9863-1:2016  Geosynthetics.  Determination of thickness at specified pressures. Single layers.
  • BS EN 22476-15:2016  Geotechnical investigation and testing.  Field testing.  Measuring while drilling.

This listing is not comprehensive and readers are referred to the BSI both for further details of changes to standards and for purchase information.

HIGHWAY EARTHWORKS

We have recently been commissioned to assess the earthworks for an adoptable access road to a housing development in Peterborough.  A high embankment is required and we are to assess the slope stability issues, collaborate with the Client to aid formation of the earthworks strategy, and to then prepare an earthworks specification with associated drawings. The work is being undertaken as a sub-Consultant to one of our regular partners.

OPENCAST BACKFILL SETTLEMENT ASSESSMENT

We have recently been commissioned to assess the long term movements likely to occur due to settlement of old backfilled opencast workings at a site in Derbyshire.  The aim is to support a proposal for adoption of an access road to a new development.  The work is being undertaken as a sub-Consultant in a phased approach.  Phase 1 of the project requires an initial mining records and geological appraisal.  This will be followed in Phase 2 by the interpretation of skip loading tests on the fill and the appraisal of the likely impact of the predicted movements on the highway and its drainage.
